Some 24,000 visitors thronged NUIG on Sunday to enjoy the 2011 Galway Science and Technology Festival Exhibition.

More than 20,000 people are estimated to have attended the fifth annual Savour Kilkenny Food Festival over the bank holiday weekend providing a welcome boost to the local economy and strengthening Kilkenny’s reputation as one of Ireland’s premier food destinations.

The 14th annual Galway Science and Technology Festival, launched this week, will feature two weeks of shows and interactive demonstrations for budding scientists of all ages.

There were disturbing echoes of the Imelda Riney murders in a wood near Whitegate, Co Clare, in April 17 years ago, in Enda Walsh’s new play Misterman, which opened this years Arts Festival on Monday. Imelda and her young four-years -old son and a priest were shot by Brendan O’Donnell, who later killed himself in prison. Woods are beautiful in springtime, but since our childhood fairy tales have told us that woods can be sinister places. In a superb piece of stage business Thomas Magill leads his angelic Edel into the woods along a green carpet which rolls out ahead of them, leading to the river where they sit. We don’t hear of Edel’s fate till the last moments of the play, but we have our suspicions.

Following the unprecedented success of the Galway Science and Technoloogy Festival, where over 20,000 attended the festival exhibition held at NUI Galway, the festival committee are now considering expanding the exhibition to a two-day event.

The Galway Festival of Science and Technology is the biggest single free event for youngsters in the West of Ireland and this week 20,000 tickets went out to schools all over the county for the festival exhibition, which is to be held at NUI, Galway on Sunday, November 21.

The renowned New Inn Mummers’ Festival will take place on Saturday January 3 and Sunday January 4.

Green Dragon skipper Ian Walker will be the guest of honour at this year’s Galway International Oyster Festival.

The committee of the New Inn Mummers festival confirmed this week that the annual staging of the event will take place in the New Inn leisure centre on Saturday January 2, and Sunday January 3.

The annual New Inn Mummers Festival, which was postponed because of the bad weather, will now be staged at the New Inn Leisure Centre on Saturday January 23.
